Local supporters say they will stay with Akin until the end

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

There are people supporting a defiant Rep. Todd Akin and plan to help him raise money now that millions of dollars have been pulled from the Missouri congressman.

Annie Fowler still supports Akin, and is going further than just forgiveness by being a part of a growing petition of women for the congressman.

"He apologized, and was very gracious and wise," Fowler said.

Fowler is not alone. In the 48 hours since news of Akin's admitted blunder regarding rape went viral, some metro women started backing him more fervently than ever.

"It didn't bother me. I didn't believe what he said, but it didn't bother me. I knew his character in his heart, and I knew that he had made a mistake," Akin supporter Sharon Allen said.

Allen, a mother of five, a nurse and a pastor for the last 40 years, plans to throw a fundraiser for Akin in October.

"If this first bump in the road is going to take us out of the election, then we have no hope or faith," Allen said.

On Akin's website, the congressman apologizes once again and asks for $3 from supporters.  On Twitter, Fred Berry, a Republican candidate from Columbia, MO, told followers Tuesday that he contributed $25 to support Akin.

There is little doubt that many Republicans are battling amongst themselves in light of this week's events, but supporters are there, and say they will stay with Akin until the end.

"He made a mistake, and he is a man," Allen said.

Some larger organizations are also sticking by the Republican.  On Akin's website, and the organization's, it shows that Missouri Right to Life PAC remains a supporter.

KCTV5 tried to call the organization, but did not get a response.

This comes after major supporters pulled funding, including Republican groups Crossroads GPS and American Crossroads.  There are also reports the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee pulled $5 million in advertising planned for Missouri.
