A Lenexa bar could be shut down for a while because of an overnight fire.
The fire broke out about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday on Santa Fe Trail Drive just east of Pflumm Road in a two-story building that houses Jerry's Bait Shop on the first floor and an apartment and office on the second floor.
It was workers in the bar who smelled the smoke first. When the fire department arrived it was for an odor investigation.
Firefighters on the scene noticed the smoke, and then fire, coming from the second floor. There was smoke and water damage to the apartment and the bar. The office was more extensively damaged.
Investigators said the cause of the fire was a cigarette left in the office. The fire department is not sure if it was left unattended, or improperly discarded.
A woman who lived in the apartment was able to get out safely, even though she admitted to the fire department that she had disabled her smoke alarm. She was called on a cell phone by someone in the bar below.
There was no structural damage to the bar, but the fire department is not sure if there will be any code issues preventing the bar from reopening
