KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A natural gas leak forced the evacuation of City Center Square in downtown Kansas City Friday morning.

Other buildings were also evacuated.

The break occurred just after 8 a.m. Chopper5 flew over as hundreds of workers spilled into downtown streets where they waited. Workers were ordered to leave immediately and asked to not use computers and other electronics to avoid a spark igniting the fumes.

City Center Square is at 1044 Main St. Several streets were closed as a precaution.

The gas leak was capped just after 10 a.m. and workers were allowed to return to their offices.

A spokesman for Missouri Gas Energy said a contractor hit the standard-sized steel gas line, leading to the break.
