KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A man was rescued eight stories up outside of a building in the city's east bottoms.

Firefighters were called to the Cargill plant, located at 2306 Rochester St., about 6:30 a.m. Thursday. The business is just east of Front Street.

A Cargill spokesperson said a contract employee started feeling ill at one of the highest points of the plant. As protocol and because of concern, they called in crews to bring him down.

The fire department brought out a high-rise ladder truck to use in the rescue. Officials say he had climbed about 145 feet up to perform maintenance on a conveyor leg.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered the worker was experiencing stomach pain. Firefighters had the man lay down in a stairwell for about 20 minutes before they put a harness around him.

During the trek down the outside stairwell, the worker appeared to be in good condition as he alternated from walking under his own power down to a platform, then being strapped to chair and being wheeled down the stairs by firefighters.

Once the worker was down safely, he was put in an ambulance and taken to an area hospital to be checked out as a precaution. Officials say he is doing well and speaking.
