JOHNSON COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -
More than 100 acres burned in Johnson County Wednesday night because of a grass fire.
Overland Park fire and police investigators said Thursday that a stolen car set on fire in a field led to the blaze.
A Boy Scout camp burned along with the vehicle and a bean field. The Boy Scout camp is no longer used. The fire was in the area of 183rd Street and State Line Road and 187th Street and Mission Road.
Investigators also found a trailer and all-terrain vehicle that someone had attempted to burn as well. Police are seeking the person or persons responsible for the blaze.
"As soon as the firefighters at the scene realized they had two separate fires, they secured those two areas then those two areas were treated as a crime scene," said Trevor Miller, an Overland Park fire investigator.
Firefighters were able to stop the flames from damaging any homes. This began before 7 p.m. and lasted for hours. The fire was still smoldering Thursday afternoon and firefighters are periodically checking to ensure the blaze doesn't re-ignite.
The stolen car had been stripped before the flames were set as the thieves sought to cover their tracks.
Crews from Johnson County Fire District #2, Overland Park, Lenexa, Leawood, Olathe, Johnson County Fire District #1, Johnson County Med-Act and Missouri assisted in battling the blaze.
Johnson County is under a burn ban.
