Death investigation under way after police find woman's body

Posted: Updated:

A local woman, recently on the Missouri Missing Person's website, was found stabbed to death behind a Gladstone apartment complex.

Gladstone police are getting help from homicide detectives from other cities like Liberty and Excelsior Springs police as they investigate the murder of a 52-year-old woman found dead in the woods behind her apartment.

Police got a call from someone who was worried about Nancy J. Bowman, 52, since they hadn't seen her in awhile. Officers came to her apartment at Mountain View Apartments near 61st Street and Bircain Place. Residents of the apartments told officers they smelled a strange odor in the woods and that's where police found her body Wednesday.

"I've known Nancy for about three years. She lived up here for awhile, real nice lady. We saw her everyday and, all of a sudden, didn't see her no more and were wondering what happened," neighbor Jacquline Banks said.

Banks often gave Bowman a ride to the store. She saw her last week and everything appeared normal, but detectives now want to talk to anyone who may have seen her in the last few days.

"They are asking that if anyone knows anything about Ms. Bowman, her whereabouts, about when she went missing, the last time she was seen, to call Gladstone police," Sgt. Richard King said.

King said Bowman was stabbed to death. There was no forced entry into her apartment and nothing was missing.

Residents like Sarah Crosby wonder who would do such a thing and why.

"I hope they get them. I want justice for her family because nobody needs to be taken out that way," Crosby said.

"It makes me kind of nervous because you really don't know who's out there," Banks said.

The medical examiner's office said the body had been in the woods for several days and it had started to decompose.

This is the third homicide this year in Gladstone and King said that's a high number for their city.

There is no suspect information available at this time.

If anyone has information, they are asked to call the Gladstone police at 816-436-3550 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
