Health officials remind parents about back-to-school shots

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Many school districts are getting ready to go back to school, but health officials are reminding parents about one of many important things they need to do before the year begins.

Immunizations are something parents must get for their children before school starts.

A Kansas City Health Department spokesperson said around this time, they begin to see long lines even though immunizations have been available all summer long. To accommodate the large number of children seeking immunizations, the health department will expand its hours.

The clinic schedule has expanded to Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Children will be seen the same day. The health department will also open its doors Saturday, Aug. 11 only from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Many schools will not admit students without updated record of immunizations.

"That's why we really do push back in June or July for people to really start looking at what is required for their child for the next school year so they can get in and get out without this long wait," spokesman for the health department Jeff Hershberger said.

Immunizations are free for children who have no insurance.
