WESTON, MO (KCTV) -
The U.S. Department of Labor confirms OSHA is investigating an explosion at KCP&L's Iatan power plant near Weston.
The small explosion was reported about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Iatan 1 located at 20250 Northwest MO 45 near Weston, MO. It happened in the B coal bunker where the coal comes into the power plant and is pulverized before it is burned.
Initially, KCP&L said OSHA was not investigating, but that has since changed.
Officials said all plant personnel were accounted for and the fire was contained quickly.
The plant was evacuated for a brief time. Approximately 250 personnel were on-site when the explosion occurred.
There were no injuries to contractors or KCP&L workers. They have all returned back into the plant.
After a thorough safety walk-through, officials determined that Iatan 1 and Iatan 2 could remain online and safely operating.
The Iatan generating station is comprised of two coal-fired power plants. Iatan 1 opened in 1980, and has a 651-megawatt generating capacity. Iatan 2 opened in 2010 and has generating capacity of over 850 megawatts.
