Charges have been filed against two Kansas City men who robbed a man on the street then led police on a dangerous chase that ended when the vehicle they were driving crashed, killing a passenger, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced Thursday.
Darren D. Thompson, 20, and Demetrius Love, 20, face the charge of first-degree robbery.
At least three people were injured and one killed after the crash following a police chase in Kansas City early Wednesday morning.
The suspects trying to get away from police did a lot of damage, speeding through a fence and hitting the front porch of a house.
Willie Lane said he's lucky, lucky that he wasn't in the path of a car that came barreling through his front yard on East 69th Street in a neighborhood just west of The Paseo shortly after 9 a.m. His fence, however, was not so lucky.
"When it hit that rosebush there, they kept rolling and rolling. Yeah," Lane said.
The chase started several blocks away with a robbery near East 70th Street and Indiana Avenue. Kansas City police said the suspects approached a construction worker and asked him for a light and a phone, then pointed a gun at him, grabbed his phone and wallet and took his debit card from his wallet.
The victim was able to get a good description of the suspect's car before they drove away and police then spotted the suspects and gave a brief chase.
The suspects, going at a high rate of speed, lost control as they swerved to miss someone, the car went through a bush and into another neighbor's yard before hitting the porch.
"I just came outside and there were people and debris everywhere," neighbor Aaron Wilkins said.
Witnesses said they heard a horrible crash, then saw police getting the men out.
Yanita Brown was also a witness and captured the injured suspects on her camera.
"It was kind of scary in the middle of the day. Not that close to me, not that close," Brown said when asked if she'd ever seen anything like this before.
Police said Thompson, Love and Gregory Wilson were occupants in the vehicle that crashed. At least one of them was ejected during the crash. Wilson was injured in the wreck and was later pronounced dead at Truman Medical Center.
Prosecutors requested a cash bond of $250,000 for Thompson and Love.
