Firefighters battle fire at KCK automobile salvage yard

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

Firefighters battled a fire at an automobile salvage yard Tuesday morning.

The fire started about 9 a.m. at You Pick salvage yard located in the 1100 block of South 12th Street near Pawnee Avenue.

Crews on the scene reported heavy smoke and fire coming from a large metal maintenance building. A flatbed tow truck was on fire inside the building, fuel storage tanks were also inside the building.

A witness said a tow truck driver threw down a cigarette and it ignited some fuel.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within 25 minutes. A hazardous materials crew was called to the scene.

Fire investigators responded to the scene and estimated damage to the building and contents to be around $100,000.

The fire was determined to be accidental. No injuries were reported.
