OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -
A metro family is trying to get more people on the bone marrow donor registry.
John Murry's four grandsons have a rare form of blood cancer. His family has held a number of registration events this summer in Kansas City, including an event held Sunday at the Church of the Ascension in Overland Park.
They are hoping to find a match for the boys, but also change the perception of being a bone marrow donor.
"People perceive this as incredibly painful. They are scared, and so our goal is to help educate and tell them 85-percent of the time it is like a blood transfusion process and it is not as painful as a process as people think," said Kathleen Parker, who is raising awareness for the bone marrow registry.
Only 2 percent of Americans nationwide are on the registry. About 10,000 people are on the waiting list for a transplant.
