Woman, 18, accused of molesting 3-year-old child

OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -

It was a disturbing crime allegedly committed in Johnson County. What authorities said a teen did to a child has her facing the possibility of life in prison.

The young woman had her first court appearance at the Johnson County courthouse Wednesday, accused of a crime many people think of as something only men do.

The charge against 18-year-old Ashleigh Geist is aggravated criminal sodomy and the penalty if convicted is 25 years to life.

"The severity of that crime depends on the age of the victim, of course, most of the time. And really it's at that ... under the age of 14 that the legislature has enacted some very serious penalties," Steve Howe, the Johnson County district attorney, said.

The child in the case was 3 years old and the alleged crimes took place earlier this month at town homes located on North Iowa Street, just north of Forest Drive, in Olathe, KS.

When KCTV5's Betsy Webster arrived at an address on Prairie Street listed for the suspect, people gathering in the drive told her and her photographer they had no comment, but one woman took issue with them approaching neighbors.

"You know what, what goes on, what happened, is the family's business, not anybody else's," the woman yelled from across the yard at the KCTV5 crew.

The woman wouldn't identify herself and said neighbors wouldn't talk.

Neighbors said police and FBI agents were at the home Tuesday morning, but those neighbors wouldn't talk on camera for fear that they would get yelled at and threatened, much like the KCTV5 crew did.

Howe wouldn't say whether the victim was a boy or girl or how Geist knew the child.

Some may be wondering how a sodomy charge can happen with a female suspect.
