KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police were on the scene of Kansas City's latest homicide Wednesday morning.

A 42-year-old man later identified as Lamont Kemp called police about 7 a.m. and said he beat his girlfriend to death, according to Kansas City Police Capt. Steve Young.

The woman, 34-year-old Laquita Long, was dead inside the home near 74th Street and College Boulevard. Kemp was arrested without problems and is cooperating with authorities, police said. He was later charged with second-degree murder.

A relative said Kemp lived at the residence with his mother and he had battled drug issues. The air conditioning was broken and the mother left the residence, leaving the man alone with Long overnight.
