HARRISONVILLE, MO (KCTV) -
The Harrisonville Police Department is currently investigating six different incidents of counterfeit money being passed at local businesses over the past week.
Police said the incidents occurred from 6 a.m. through 11 p.m. at convenience stores and fast food restaurants where quick service is expected.
Sharp-eyed employees at three of the businesses have busted the man and called police. Police and employees said the counterfeit bills don't feel the same.
"When they handle money all day, they know when somebody hands them something that doesn't feel right," Harrisonville Police Lt. Mike Prindle said.
But the suspect fled before officers arrived. The "funny money" was successfully used at three businesses.
The suspect has been described by witnesses as a skinny white man, 5'9" to 5'10" in height with a slender build. The man is described as having dark brown or reddish hair, he is unshaven with a possible goatee and was last seen wearing blue jean shorts. Witnesses said the man had numerous tattoos on his arms that appeared to be "sleeves."
Police said the counterfeit suspect has been seen with a woman and another man driving a white Dodge Charger and a dark green Pontiac with the Missouri license plate UG5-H5J.
The suspect has presented several $20 counterfeit bills and a few $10 bills to businesses, according to police. For example, he will buy a 69 cent soda, pay with a $20 and get the remainder in change.
The bogus bills carry the same serial number.
Any business owner or employee who may have contact with the described suspect(s) are urged to contact the Harrisonville Police Department immediately at (816) 380-8940 or 911.
The U.S. Secret Service is assisting with the investigation, Prindle said.
