Open house answers questions about Google Fiber

Posted: Updated:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A brand new way to use the internet is coming soon to Kansas City and your neighborhood could be the first in the country to get it. Saturday, Google introduced its service with the first of several open house events.

Saturday's event is the first chance regular people in Kansas City are getting to see how the service will work, from the equipment they will receive if they sign up to so much more.

People at Saturday's event on 1814 Westport Rd. got to interact and try out the equipment as if it was in their own home.

Currently, 29 neighborhoods have already met the threshold of showing interest in getting connected so they're already guaranteed service when Google starts hooking up fiber in the neighborhoods of Kansas City, KS, and central Kansas City, MO, likely this fall. This falls in line with Google's idea of giving the service first to those who are most interested.

The enthusiasm neighborhoods are showing in rallying their residents together over the next six weeks to get them to become a "fiberhood" is exactly why Kansas City was chosen in the first place to be the first in the country to have Google Fiber.

"There's obviously a futuristic feel to it. It's something they don't have anywhere," Shawnee resident Don Lampert said.

"It's going to affect their lives a lot more. They're going to be able to look stuff up, talk to other classmates over the internet, prepare notes," KCK resident Robert Allen said.

The open house runs until 8 p.m. Saturday and goes from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.
