Female pedestrian dead, toddler injured, in fatal hit-and-run

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A woman is dead and a toddler has serious injuries after being hit by a car on Sumner Avenue in Springfield Friday night.

Springfield police say a white car struck a woman pushing a stroller across the street. A car following the white car also hit the woman and dragged the stroller with the toddler 20 feet.

The woman was pronounced dead at Baystate Medical Center, the child is in serious condition.

Police have not confirmed if the female is the toddler's mother.

Police say the white car that initially hit the woman took off. Police say it is a Ford Escort, possibly a wagon with a blue stripe, that might have a broken side mirror.

The driver in the second car pulled over. The accident is under investigation.
