Dozens of cars vandalized in Roeland Park

ROELAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Dozens of people at a Roeland Park apartment complex woke up Friday morning to discover they were crime victims.

People getting into their cars at the Boulevard Apartments were greeted with a serious headache before they even started their morning commute.

"I've got a keying there on the front door of my car," vandalism victim Ian Stanek said.

Stanek's car is branded with what looks like the word "booths."

"I have no idea what it could mean, why someone would scratch that onto a car. But people do stupid and crazy things," he said.

In the apartment complex, vandals scratched random words as well as four-letter words deeply into the paint of at least 47 different cars.

"Just random, some four-letter words. Things that wouldn't indicate any type of bias," Police Chief Rex Taylor said.

Roeland Park police don't think anyone was specifically targeted.

"We're going to try to find exactly where they are, see if there's a pattern to see where they started, where they ended," Taylor said.

Victims of the vandalism are impatient for answers and are staring down an expensive hassle.

"It's going to cost us $500, plus we're late to work," one victim said.

They said the apparently random act doesn't make sense.

"It's just not right, it's just not right," said another victim.

While police search for a suspect or reason behind the vandalism, people at the apartment complex are carrying on with their day, while keeping a sharp lookout.

"Stop, you will be caught," said a vandalism victim.

Police said there's not much a person can do to prevent vandalism such as what happened Friday morning. Officials just recommend people keep their car in a lit area.

Anyone with information about Friday's vandalism is asked to call the Roeland Park police at 913-677-3363.
