KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Two men were separately fishing at a Kessler Park pond when three men attacked them.

One man was robbed by the three men. As two of the three men approached the second man, that victim fought back and a tussle ensued.

The second man was then shot in the head. The suspects took the first man's car keys and stole his black Ford Expedition SUV.

"I thank God," the first man told KCTV5's Sandra Olivas. "He's ultimate because a gun was pointed at my face. It could have gone off in a flash and I would have been gone."

These violent crimes occurred just after 9 a.m. Thursday. The park is in the Old Northeast area of Kansas City near Cliff Drive and Chestnut Avenue.

The two men made it to an area in the 300 block of The Paseo where they called 911 for help.

The man that was shot was talking when he was transported by ambulance to an area hospital. He was released from the hospital early Thursday evening.

The first fisherman, who asked not to be identified because the suspects have not been caught, said both he and the injured man are lucky to be alive.

"These guys came up from behind me. They walked up to me with a gun at my head," the victim said."He said you know what this is. You don't want to lose your life. It's not worth it. We are going to rob you and the guy down the way. Don't move. Don't even think about it because I have no problem shooting you and throwing you in the water."

He is a retired disabled veteran who enjoys spending his mornings fishing for catfish at the small pond.

The man watched in disbelief as the suspects shot the second fisherman.

"All of a sudden I heard, 'Pow.' I'm like, 'Oh, my God.' And I heard the guy yell, 'Ow!'" the man recalled.

The man was shot in the back of the head. He held a towel to his bleeding head.

"He's lucky to be alive. Definitely lucky. We both are actually," the victim said.

The three men took his cellphone, his wallet, car keys and truck. It was later found abandoned in the area.

Police are looking for the suspects. They are processing the SUV for evidence in hopes it will lead to the suspects. The victim hopes they are found soon.

"Whatever it takes. Somebody needs to take that gun from them. I don't want this to happen to anyone else," he said.
