Independence firefighters battle large blaze in subdivision

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

Independence firefighters battled a large fire in a residential area at 44th Street and Phelps Road.

Three homes burned in the two-alarm fire. One of the houses was gutted.

The cause is under investigation.

The dry, windy conditions allowed the fire to spread from house to house through embers that landed on roof shingles. The grass was also scorched.

Laura Sola and four other family members were renovating the home in preparation to move into it. They were renting the house, which would have been their first home with a yard.

She was distraught. She arrived at the house to do work on the bathroom. She was accompanied by her three children. She saw smoke coming from a cable connector. She opened the basement door and saw the basement was filled with smoke. Her hand was singed on the basement door knob.

The home's owner lives next door and that home also caught fire. Adam Robinett and his mother escaped along with their seven pets. Robinett's mother was taken to the hospital to be checked out as a precaution due to her high blood pressure and other health conditions.

By 7 p.m., firefighters had the flames doused. They were working to clear debris and ensure the fire didn't re-ignite.

Firefighters were called at 3:50 p.m. and arrived three minutes later, officials said.

Neither the homeowner nor Sola and her family had insurance. Sola's lease at a duplex expires next week and she's uncertain what she's going to do.
