Farmers struggling after last year's deluge, this year's drought

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

First, it was the deluge. Now, it's the drought.

Kansas City area farmers struggled for two years with flooding. Now it's a crippling summer with no rain that's drying up crops.

"Nature has not cooperated," Menno Attema, a farmer, said. "2009 was our last best year."

The prolonged heat has cost Attema most of his corn. Now his soybeans are wilting and he's left hoping for rain.

"You can't rule Mother Nature so you deal with it," Attema said.

Flood waters covered his fields last year. Now the rain he didn't want last year he desperately wants.

"You got from wet to too dry," Attema said.

He said most farmers have federal crop insurance. This helps farmers start over next year after they lose their crops. Attema just hopes the extreme weather conditions don't carry over to 2013.
