KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
A man is in the hospital after being attacked by another man with a hammer Monday night.
Police received a call early Monday morning from a Northland hospital about a possible assault.
Once officers arrived at the scene, they questioned the victim, a 32-year-old man. The victim said that he was at a friend's house when he started to receive phone calls. At the time, he did not answer the calls and let them go to voicemail.
Once the man had left his friend's house he listened to the voicemails. The messages left were of a strange man threatening to kill the victim. The victim then called the suspect back and agreed to meet him to fight.
When the two men met they had words and punches were exchanged.
The victim said that the suspect had what he thought was a stick in his hand, but when the suspect got closer, the victim then saw that it was a hammer.
According to the victim, the suspect kept saying he was going to "kill him." He tried to fight the suspect off and believes he was struck in the head at least 12 times.
Once the suspect was done, the victim says the suspect took off with the victim's cell phone and the money in his wallet.
The victim walked back to his friend's house where he was then taken to the local hospital where he received seven staples and 12 stitches. Doctors also said that he had a depressed skull fracture.
The victim said that he did know the suspect and that he used to date the victim's current girlfriend.
Police are still investigating.
