Detours for drivers after 2 wrecks on US 71 north of Harrisonville

Posted: Updated:

A person suffered serious injuries and was transported by helicopter to an area hospital after a two-car accident on U.S. Highway 71, authorities said.

All but one of the southbound lanes of Highway 71 just north of Harrisonville reopened about 1 p.m. after the wreck. All lanes then closed a few minutes later because of another accident after a car caught fire.

The second accident closed the lanes of traffic near the 237th Street bridge about 11:45 a.m. Monday.

The Missouri Department of Transportation said the second accident was unrelated to the original accident.

No injuries have been reported in the second wreck.

As of 2:30 p.m. Monday, the right lane of southbound U.S. 71 has reopened.

MoDOT said southbound traffic may detour at Route C in Peculiar by heading south on Route C to Route 2, then east on Route 2 to Route 71.
