OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -
Friday, animal control went to a home in Olathe, KS, to take custody of a baby copperhead snake that bit a man the night before.
The man was bit about 9:30 p.m. Thursday in a residential area at Gleason Road and Lewis Drive.
Investigators said the man suffered critical injuries after being bitten. He was taken to the hospital, given an antidote and is now recovering.
A neighbor in the area said he'd never seen anything like this before.
"It's odd, we've been here for seven years and haven't seen anything like it this year. Neighbors are watering their yards, snakes are trying to escape the heat, they're navigating close to the house," Gerry Beck said.
The snake was left in a sealed barrel until animal control could get to it Friday morning. Officials said, because the snake is a baby, its venom is even more potent.
The victim's wife said about 11 p.m. Thursday her husband was in pain after being treated, but stable.
He is expected to be released from the hospital later Friday.
