A 19-year-old and 20-year-old have been charged in the home invasion and shooting of an Independence man less than a week prior, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced.

Juan Hayes faces charges of first-degree assault, first-degree burglary and two counts of armed criminal action.

Ramon D. Mack Jr. also faces first-degree assault, first-degree burglary and two counts of armed criminal action charges.

Police were previously looking for information on the home invasion which occurred Friday about 11:30 p.m. in the 9800 block of E. Winner Road.

When officers arrived, the victim told them his doorbell rang and before he could answer it, a black man, wearing a ski mask, came into the home uninvited. Court documents said the victim told the man to get out of his house and ran into his bedroom to get his handgun.

The victim said as he came out of his bedroom, the suspect shot him in the face.

A witness later told police a green, late 90s Grand Prix-type vehicle pulled in front of the address and they saw two black men exit the vehicle and walk up to the home. The vehicle was driven around and waited for the two men to come out of the home.

The victim was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.

According to court records, Hayes told police he went to the home late Friday with a juvenile suspect and Mack with the intention of burglarizing it. They rang the doorbell and walked in. Hayes said he heard the victim say to get out, then he heard a shot.

According to court documents, Mack told police he ran after the victim with a pistol and fired a shot. All the suspects fled. Police found the victim, according to court records, shot in the face. His cell phone was taken by the intruders.

According to court documents, police were able to track the stolen cell phone to the juvenile suspect, who had it in his possession. Hayes, the juvenile and Mack were all taken into police custody.

Prosecutors requested a cash bond of $250,000 for Hayes. They requested a $500,000 bond for Mack.
