INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

Saturday more than a 1,000 volunteers are pitching in once again to work together to support Independence schools.

Project Shine provides an opportunity for community members, parents, faculty, and staff to gather together and put an extra shine on the schools. The volunteers are painting, cleaning, landscaping, and updating the five schools.

This year will be the fifth annual Project Shine for the Independence School District. Over the past five years, Project Shine has helped better the schools while unifying the community around projects that support the children.

The largest number of volunteers is expected at Van Horn High School, where the school will receive a fresh coat of paint and new landscaping.

There are special groups of volunteers who have signed up at several of the schools. JobOne, an organization that provides employment for adults with disabilities, has a group of disabled employees volunteering at Hanthorn this year.

The five schools getting the extra shine this year are Van Horn High School, Hanthorn, Santa Fe Elementary, Spring Branch, and Benton Elementary.
