OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -
A small fire outside an Olathe high school was caused by bags of lacquer-laden sawdust that spontaneously combusted, investigators said.
The fire was reported about 6 a.m. Tuesday at Olathe East High School.
When firefighters arrived, they found a small fire against the brick exterior of the building in a service-type area located at the rear of the school. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and determined it had not spread to the inside of the building.
Investigators believe the accidental fire was caused when trash bags containing lacquer-laden sawdust spontaneously combusted. The sawdust was created and discarded when contractors removed the floor finish from the school's basketball court.
Damage is estimated at $10,000. No injuries were reported.
