Police take extra precautions after downtown scare during All-Star Sunday

Posted: Updated:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Restaurant and bar patrons were ordered away from windows along Grand Boulevard on Sunday night after a suspicious package was found near the Sprint Center.

Streets were also closed off near Grand and 14th Street.

Police were on heightened alert with Major League Baseball's Mid-Summer Classic in Kansas City.

Just before 7 p.m. Sunday, someone called 911 to report a man inside a van with a blow torch and a box sitting outside the vehicle. The man was a satellite dish installer, but the box did not belong to him.

Kansas City Police Major Rich Lockhart said precautions were taken. The box was examined and determined to contain catalogues and other materials related to the All-Star festivities.

This is the type of situation that police have trained for to ensure a safe experience for fans, Lockhart said.
