KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -
Two people are dead following a single-vehicle accident and several others are still in the hospital.
The fiery crash happened about 3 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Roe Lane underneath the Interstate 35 overpass.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says the incident began with Roeland Park police investigating a suspicious vehicle call near a Walmart store located at 5150 Roe Blvd.
Police were attempting to make a traffic stop, but the 2002 Ford Explorer sped off.
Authorities said the driver of the SUV was attempting to navigate a curve in the road but lost control. All seven people in the vehicle were thrown from it as the SUV burst into flames.
The driver, Alexis Medina, 18, and his passenger Karla Robledo, 18, both of Kansas City, MO, died in the crash.
Gabriela Villa-Paralta, 19, Damian Franklin, 17, David Solis-Lopez and Eduardo Chacon Solis, both 16, and Lorenzo G Solis, 15, were all taken to area hospitals.
Investigators say they did find alcohol in the SUV, but don't know whether that was behind the crash.
