KENNER, LA (WAFB) -

A 19-year-old Louisiana man is in the hospital after police said he suffered serious injuries trying to light a "sparkler bomb."

Authorities said Daniel Duzac of Kenner wrapped more than 100 sparklers together and added a fuse to create an explosive device.

WWL-TV in New Orleans reported Kenner Police Chief Steve Caraway when Duzac tried to remove the fuse from the lit device, the bomb exploded in his hand.

Investigators said the blast blew off Duzac's left hand, two fingers on his right hand and burned his legs.

Caraway said the teen was rushed into emergency surgery and remains in guarded condition.

Police said no one else was injured by the bomb, but three cars were damaged in the explosion.

Making a bomb out of sparklers is considered a felony offense.

According to police, the district attorney will decide whether to charge Duzac in the incident.
