KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
Event organizers are taking extra precautions with the Kansas City area in a heat wave this Fourth of July.
Pyro tech operators were taking steps to ensure fireworks didn't set fires. This included having extra fire extinguishers and fire trucks on hand.
Festival organizers were letting families bring in bottles of water so that they can stay hydrated. Cold water misting tents were set up and fans were being handed out.
"It's hot, but my kids are having a blast, so that's all that matters," said Jenn Pate, who was attending Kansas City's Riverfest.
Paramedics stood ready to assist anyone with heat distress, and an air-conditioned trailer was available.
Judith Boris said she didn't want to let the intense temperatures ruin her Independence Day.
"It is really hot, but I thought it (Riverfest) would be a great event for kids to have fun," she said. "It beats sitting inside all day."
Prairie Village celebrated with a parade Wednesday. This is the 25th year.
People from across the area both young and old brought their families and some pets to enjoy the 20-minute parade. Residents decorate bikes, strollers and wagons.
Families said it was a great day to come together and celebrate our nation's rich history.
"We want to help celebrate the birthday of our country," Doug Gipson said.
About 250 attended the event.
