Best, worst revealed in crash avoidance systems

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Car companies are developing new technologies to make people's drive safer, but a new report shows some of them may miss the mark.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released findings from its research that show the best and worst crash avoidance systems on the market.

The new research gathered from the Highway Loss Data Institute shows how each feature designed to protect people while they are in their car fared under a number of insurance claims and injuries reported during collisions.

The data used by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety included cars from 2000 through 2011 and was dependent upon when the automaker introduced the feature.

Adaptive headlights struck high on the list. Often the adaptive headlights are brighter and are more responsive to the driver.

"Forward collision avoidance systems are intended to address that very common crash that might occur if you're following the vehicle too closely. If that vehicle suddenly stops or your distracted the system will warn you of an impending collision hoping that you will step on the brakes," said David Zuby, IIHS chief research officer. "Some systems will do the breaking for you if you fail to respond in time."

Another feature included on the IIHS list of top crash avoidance options is the camera and sensor options which are now available on most cars on the market.
