OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Just before 11 a.m. Saturday crews from the Overland Park Fire Department responded to a building fire call in the at 105th and Goddard Street at the Highland Park Apartments.

First crews on the scene reported smoke and fire on the first floor patio, second story deck and spreading into the attic.

All residents were about to get out of the apartments. Firefighters started with an exterior attack on the fire. They quickly knocked down the fire on the outside, then went to the attic and knocked down the remaining fire.

No injuries are reported.

Investigators believe the fire was caused by careless discard of a cigarette.

Damage is estimated at $80,000.

Overland Park Fire wants to remind people that the current dry conditions drastically increase the danger of fire spread. If you smoke, do so outside and use a can filled with water or sand to completely extinguish smoking materials before discarding them.
