KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
Thursday, families voiced their anger over state budget cuts that they said will hurt those who can least afford it.
The state cuts from the budget include about $10 million from early childhood education programs statewide. At Operation Breakthrough, that amounts to $200,000 and 35 out of 70 early childhood slots that they will no longer have.
A group of parents, administrators and children staged an indoor rally to raise their voice in opposition to the cuts. The co-founder of the center said it's unfair to working families and it penalizes those who did the right thing.
"The state told them to get off welfare and now we've taken child care from 800 people statewide," Sister Berta Sailer said.
"We need to call our senators and legislators and let them know this sacrifice should not fall on the backs of our children in this community," Candace Cheatem with Local Investment Commission said.
The governor hasn't yet signed this budget into law. Those who oppose the budget cuts are urging people to call their legislators and Gov. Jay Nixon to see if a compromise can be reached.
