Woman uses lighter to find meds, starts apartment fire

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

An overnight apartment fire in South Nashville destroyed one unit and damaged several others.

The fire occurred at the South Brook Apartments on Linbar Drive just before midnight.

Investigators said a woman dropped her medication in the dark and grabbed a lighter to try and find it. In the process, she set her mattress on fire.

Smoke alarms did not go off but everyone escaped unharmed. However, a firefighter hurt his hand battling the blaze and was taken to an area hospital.

The woman responsible for the fire lost many possessions and is being assisted by Red Cross.
