LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -
Local kids are spending their summer in front of a green screen preparing to be silver screen innovators.
Seth Peters of Lawrence, KS, is a quirky 13-year-old who converses with others like an adult who has lived decades. Perhaps that is why the sophistication of one summer academy at Lightlyre Films, LLC is a perfect fit for teens like him.
"I would love to make movies. I feel like it's my calling," Peters said.
The five-week summer academy teaches teens 11 to 17 years old how to create a movie entirely in front of a green screen. They learn computer animation and techniques that can transform a green set into a story about a kid-run spaceship voyage.
"I'm the sort of person who has ideas popping out of my head. You want to make a film out of that. You want to show the rest of the world. So I thought this would be the best way to get my ideas out there," Peters said.
Lightlyre Films owner, Dan Ginavan shoots and edits documentaries and the summer camp is a new idea his company is trying out. He says the academy is paying homage to his own childhood.
"I see myself a lot in several of these kids - the enthusiasm, the desire to make these films. They're also finding out making films is hard, sweaty, boring dirty work," Ginavan said.
The second of two academies begins July 9. To learn more about how to register students, click here.
