One day before Memorial Day, Chicopee rededicated a monument to a fallen marine who called the city home.
The city's tribute was for former Chicopee resident Sgt. Steven LaRiviere.
The Marine was killed in 1983 while serving on a peace-keeping mission in Beirut, Lebanon.
The monument has been in front of the fire department's headquarters for years, but those in charge felt it was time to spruce it up.
"Every day I would walk by and I would see how overgrown it was," said Capt. David Beauregard of the Chicopee Fire Department. "That's no way to honor the sacrifice of a service member. So I said, 'We need to do something about this.'"
"Here we are 30 years later, feeling a lot less intimidated," said Linda Rooney, LaRiviere's sister. "We're still thinking about Steven, but now my mother and father are there with him and that's fine."
LaRiviere's nephew was named after him and "young" Steven is a member of the Junior ROTC.
He says his uncle has inspired him to possible pursue a military career.
