KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -
Customers of the Indians Springs post office are unhappy that their facility is closing.
The post office at 49th Street and State Avenue is closing because of a rent issue. Operations will be consolidated with the Roberts station, which is off 51st Street and Leavenworth Road.
Stewart Fields said he was startled because the Indian Springs facility is larger than other smaller facilities closed because of their size. He said he is saddened because the facility was so handy for him.
"I'm very disappointed because I've been in this area for 23 years. This is my post office," said Marsha Nave. "I really want a post office in this area. It is very inconvenient to go elsewhere."
Richard Watkins, a spokesman for the post office, said the federal agency is losing $25 million a day. He said streamlining is needed, and he said the post office couldn't get a favorable rent deal to keep the Indian Springs post office open.
The Roberts station is three miles away, Watkins said.
He said Congress is looking at legislation to improve the postal service's operations.
This includes rural postal offices, retail hours and consolidated mail routes.
"No one solution is going to cure what ails (the postal service). We have to look at all our operations," Watkins said.
No employee will lose their job. They will be transferred to the Robert station or the mail center.
Friday was the center's last day.
