TONGANOXIE, KS (KCTV) -
School districts are working to make sure students are prepared as industries race into the future, and they are taking advantage of the latest in technology.
Now parents in Tonganoxie have a new option when it comes to giving their child a 21st century education.
The Tonganoxie School District is going digital at a time where computers are the going thing. They are making getting an education accessible through a virtual program.
And soon parents in Tonganoxie will have a decision to either keep their students on campus in front of a teacher learning or sitting them down in front of a computer.
The virtual program is schooling completely online that a student can enroll in thanks to a partnership between the Tonganoxie School District and Greenbush Education Services.
Beginning next fall, students will be able to ditch their text books and go to school in the comfort of their own home online.
Tonganoxie superintendent Randy Weseman said students will have more options for classes than what is offered on campus.
School officials say the cost to the student will be about $90. And students who choose to go to school online will still be able to participate in on campus activities if they want to.
"Through a virtual partnership, if they are enrolled in a virtual school but at least attend one of their classes at the high school campus," said Bart Swartz with Greenbush Education Services. "so let's say five of their classes are virtual, and they attend one campus class. Then that school district has the opportunity to allow them to participate in activities in the district."
Tonganoxie district officials say enrollment will begin in August.
