SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -
A decades-long tradition returned to downtown Springfield on Saturday morning as thousands gathered for the 2012 "World's Largest Pancake Breakfast."
The event, originally organized to break a world record, now brings thousands of families together on Main Street for a hot breakfast in an area that was devastated by a tornado nearly one year ago.
"A year ago we were coming off of devastating tornadoes, a terrible weather year, and look at downtown Springfield now. Thousands of people having a great time ... family time in downtown Springfield," said mayor Domenic Sarno.
As always, food choices included pancakes and bacon, served up by area community organizations, including CBS 3 Springfield staff members.
Entertainment at this year's breakfast featured live music from area school bands, dance troupes, and a flash mob that broke out in a group dance just after 9:30 a.m. There was also a display of Springfield fire trucks, along with horse-drawn wagon rides.
"It's my first time here, and I'm enjoying it," said Rose Lopez of Springfield. "There's a lot of nice vendors, and I'm seeing people I know and having a great time."
Organizers estimate between 8,000 and 10,000 people showed up for this year's breakfast.
