Summer camp helps kids with ADHD with new therapy

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

It is a program that is only being used in a handful of states, and now it is coming to Kansas City to help local families and children with ADHD.

Children's Mercy Hospital's summer program gives families with ADHD children a chance at intense therapy never seen in the Kansas City area.

It is an eight-week, eight hours a day, five days a week summer camp that teaches ADHD kids ages six to nine social skills, sportsmanship and conflict resolution in classroom settings with peer groups.

The program was first designed 25 years ago in Buffalo, NY, and doctors say it is an evidence-based technique that's only being used in a handful of states.

"Most of the time for anything, from baseball to golf to fencing to driving a car to flying an airplane, most of the time concerted, concentrated training is more effective than intermittent training … but that's almost never available for families with ADHD," Dr. Edwards Christophersen said.

The 320 hours of therapy would normally take six years and $30 ,000 using common treatment methods.

But in this case the camp would cost $4,000 per child.

If anyone is interested in signing their kid up, there are 30 spots. The number to call is 913-676-5748.
