Residents coping after losing homes, memories from Wichita twister

WICHITA, KS (KCTV) -

People not far from the metro are coping with losing homes and the memories they have built after an EF-3 twister touched down in Wichita.

The Pinaire Mobile Home Park sustained a good part of the damage from the tornado that moved through Saturday night.

Dozens of piles of debris line Idlewood Street in south Wichita, where homes with windows blown out are now being boarded up.

Now the rebuilding begins.

Briana Boggs lost everything Saturday night when an EF-3 tornado, packing winds up to 160 mph, tore through the mobile home park where she lived.

She points to where her home used to stand.

"It is the base of my trailer, and half of the wall is somewhere else. It is a whole room somewhere else," Boggs said.

Her mobile home park took a direct hit from the tornado and says 30 minutes before the tornado hit, she made the decision to seek shelter at her grandmother's house down the road in Derby.

The traffic going in and coming out of the mobile home park was heavy Sunday as residents tried to salvage what they could from the debris.

Boggs only has a few photos and the clothing on her back.  She can't even make out what used to be her home.

"I saw it, and I just hit my knees and started crying. Where do you go from there? There is no where. Eighteen, you are out ... where do you go? Where do you start? Where do you pick up? What do you think your basic needs are?" Boggs said.

Boggs said she doesn't know where to go or where to start picking up the pieces.

A handful of people, including Patty Durrell, say they were fortunate.

Durrell wasn't home when the tornado hit, but got the news her home had been damaged from her best friend who lives next door.

The Red Cross is assisting many residents who lost their homes, and if anyone would like to help by making a donation, they can do so by calling the Red Cross.
