Group probes flash mobs, social media

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Kansas City Mayor Sly James wants to hear from area youth about flash mobs and social media.

James wants to prevent a repeat of last summer when swarms of youth roaming the Country Club Plaza led to violence and a new curfew law.

The city is working with a variety of partners to develop a study about social media gatherings and why some turn violent.

Leigh Anne Taylor Knight with the Kansas City Area Research Consortium says teens use Twitter, Facebook and other social media outlets to set up meeting locations with few having nefarious intentions.

"There were many of the adults who were talking about what we should do to resolve this or to be proactive for the summer of 2012, but no one was systematically collecting the voice of the teens in our community," she said.

The group has met with teens but is looking for more voices. If you are a teen or know one who wants to participate, email lknight@kcaerc.org.
