A necropsy determined that a family's beloved Chihuahua was killed by another animal and not a person as the family had thought.

A vet conducted the necropsy and sent her findings to Kansas City police.

Chica died last week. The 4-year-old dog ran outside to chase a cat near NE 50th Street and North Kensington. Danielle Carter discovered the dog's battered body about 45 minutes later.

The family thought that someone had mutilated the dog. Animal control also thought that a human was responsible.

A reward of $2,500 was offered.

The vet found that the Chica suffered broken bones, a torn spleen, a fractured skull and other injuries.

The bruising, teeth marks and injuries were consistent with being caused by another animal, likely a dog.

"What we initially thought was someone intentionally starting to 'skin' this dog could also be explained by an attack by another animal during which the victim animal was shaken violently," the vet said.
