Federal agents have recovered an assault rifle in Arizona registered to the Platte County Sheriff's Office.
The M-14 was recovered from a firearms dealer by the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Platte County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
The rifle was purchased during a prior administration and was no longer part of the sheriff's office inventory when Sheriff Richard Anderson took office in 1997.
"The sheriff's office is currently working with the ATF to try and determine how the weapon ended up in Arizona," according to a statement from Anderson's office.
The investigation will look into whether the gun was sold or traded to another law enforcement agency or illegal activity led to its discovery in Arizona.
The M-14 is known partly as the weapon used in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
