Spring training hasn't even started yet, but Saturday hundreds of people poured into Kauffman Stadium for the third annual "Royals Fans Got Talent" auditions. Their goal was to prove they have what it takes to sing before thousands of people on game day.
Saturday, the action wasn't on the diamond but below the stands as dozens of talented performers vied for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Monica Stanley braved the single digit temperatures Saturday morning because, once she heard about the auditions, she knew she had to tryout.
"Singing is my life. I would die without it. I'm happy to be here," she said.
Stanley has sang before big crowds before, and had her pre-game strategy down pat.
"I just shake it all out, then I'm good. Just warm up my voice a little bit," she said.
Still, nerves were running high as the judges cast an intimidating stare at the performers.
Megan Wellborn was one of four judges who will decide who makes the cut, and she was impressed by what she saw.
"Luckily we have 81 games. We've seen lots of talented people today, and it's been a really successful day so far. We're looking for 81 games and luckily we have the seventh inning stretch they can sing, God Bless America, O Canada, so there's lots of opportunities for people," said Wellborn.
In all, more than 100 people came out, making year three of "Royals Fans Got Talent" the largest yet.
The judges will take a few days to review the contenders and will be calling those who made the cut within the next week or so.
For anyone who couldn't make it out to Saturday's auditions, there is still a shot at singing before thousands on game day. Just head to the Royals website for tryout details.
