A Raytown mother of three and grandmother of six is now $1 million richer.
Roberta Sinclair matched all five white-ball numbers drawn on Jan. 28 with a used quick pick random draw, making her Missouri's first $1 million winner since Powerball changed in mid-January.
Powerball players before Jan. 15 who matched all five white-ball numbers won $200,000. She just missed getting the Powerball right.
Sinclair, who recently retired after 33 years at General Motors Fairfax plant, said she "couldn't believe it" when she checked the winning combination from her home computer the day of the drawing.
When she read the numbers online, she thought to herself that she better go over the numbers again, and then realized she had become a millionaire.
"I sat there and took it all in," Sinclair said.
Then she made a very important phone call.
"The first thing I did was call my tax man," Sinclair said. "But I really haven't made any big plans or anything."
Sinclair also said the $1 million prize wouldn't cause her to do anything out of the ordinary, but it will make her plans easier.
"It's about time for me to trade cars," she said.
She also intends to travel to Arizona and visit family. Her family will get an extra special Christmas this year.
An Apple Market grocery store in Raytown received a $1,000 bonus for selling the winning Powerball ticket.
Purchasing a couple of tickets a month paid off for Sinclair. She said she had recently cut back on the number of tickets she buys because of a price increase.
"The guy informed me the tickets were now $2 a piece instead of a dollar, so I only bought five of them," she said.
Uncle Sam got nearly $300,000 of her winnings. But she's quite OK with that.
