Woman delivers baby girl after car strikes semi

JOHNSON COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -

A pregnant woman who was trapped and unconscious following an accident between a car and a semi truck Wednesday morning is expected to be OK and has welcomed a new baby girl into the world.

The accident happened just before 7 a.m. on northbound Interstate 35 near 167th Street in Johnson County, east of the city of Gardner.

One lane was shut down as the Kansas Highway Patrol investigated the accident.

Nikki R. McClure, 33, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to an area hospital. She underwent surgery and delivered her baby girl a month early.

Family says the baby is healthy and doing well.

McClure was apparently traveling to work at an area hospital when the crash occurred. She was wearing her seatbelt, which authorities believed saved her life and that of her baby.

Authorities believe the woman's 2000 Hyundai car struck the back end of a semi and then went off the road. Witnesses said they saw the hood of McClure's car lodged in the back of the semi as it continued northbound.

McClure's vehicle was traveling at highway speeds while the rig was going much slower, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol report.

The semi was not at the scene when authorities arrived.

Investigators believe the semi driver didn't know the accident happened.

Witnesses described the truck as a tractor and trailer with an enclosed box. Evidence at the scene suggests that the truck may also have ice built up on it from traveling through icy areas.  Witnesses could not provide a color or any markings for the truck or trailer.

Investigators said the truck should have significant damage to the rear-end protection system of the trailer.

The Kansas Highway Patrol would like to speak to the driver and any passengers of the semi. In addition, if you saw the crash, contact police.
