Two Kansas City men have been charged in the August 2010 slaying of Lance Rutter, shot while sitting on his front porch at 5 a.m., Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced Tuesday.
Jamal R. Young, 20, and Danzel A. Reese, 19, face charges of second degree murder, first degree robbery and two counts of armed criminal action.
According to court documents, Rutter and another man were sitting on the front porch in the 3800 block of Baltimore when two men approached, armed with handguns. One pointed a gun at the victim, while the other pointed a gun at the other man. They demanded money. When the witness handed over a wallet, one suspect ran away. But the victim began to argue, and the second suspect shot him.
Another witness told police that he was waiting for Reese and Young nearby when Young returned, carrying a wallet. Young dropped it when he heard a gunshot. Later, Reese ran back and told him he shot the victim when he didn't comply. Police recovered the wallet and laser sight from nearby. DNA from the sight matched Reese.
Both Reese and Young are currently in custody.
Prosecutors have requested $250,000 cash bonds on each defendant.
