Willie Roaf got his spot in Canton on his second try.The Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee announced on Saturday that former Kansas City Chiefs Willie Roaf will be enshrined as part of the Hall of Fame's Class of 2012.
Roaf spent enough time in his 13 seasons with New Orleans and Kansas City blocking the likes of Chris Doleman and Cortez Kennedy. He played one season at right tackle, then the rest of his career on the left side, making 11 Pro Bowls. He made the All-Decade team for the 1990s.
Former Chiefs lineman Will Shields will have to wait at least another year to obtain football immortality.
Shields, the only first-year eligible player to make the 15-man finals, found out Saturday that he didn't get in this year. Shields started all but one of the 224 games in his 14 seasons in Kansas City. He also made 12 Pro Bowls.
The 2012 Hall of Fame Class will be enshrined in Canton, OH on Saturday, Aug. 4.
"On behalf of my family and the entire Chiefs organization, we are thrilled to congratulate Willie Roaf on his well-deserved selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2012," Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in a news release. "Willie is one of the finest offensive lineman to suit up in a Chiefs uniform and is worthy of this extremely prestigious honor."
Roaf, a Pine Bluff, AR native, spent four seasons with Kansas City (2002-05) earning Pro Bowl invitations, the highest total by any offensive tackle in Chiefs history.
"In his four seasons with the Chiefs, Willie anchored one of the best offensive lines in the National Football League," Hunt said. "Today's announcement solidifies his place as one of the greatest offensive lineman in the history of pro football."
Roaf blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher during three of his four seasons with the Chiefs.
