A section of Interstate 35 in Daviess County is closed after two tractor-trailer rigs collided and caught fire.

The fatal head-on collision happened about 1:10 a.m. Friday near the Winston exit about 10 miles northeast of Cameron.

The southbound lanes remain closed, the Missouri Highway Patrol said.

A northbound semi apparently crossed the median and hit a southbound rig at mile marker 61, according to troopers.

The driver traveling north died at the scene. A passing motorist yanked a passenger from the burning semi. The passenger was flown by air ambulance to KU Med.

The driver of the southbound rig was also injured and taken to Cameron Regional Medical Center. He is expected to recover.

Both vehicles burned to their frames and 600 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into a ditch alongside the interstate.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will need to help contain the spill. The section of interstate could stay closed until early afternoon.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
